The inception of Puerto Banús dates back to the 1970s when the entire area, including the marina and the adjacent residential zone known as ‘Nueva Andalucía’, was part of José Banús’s vision.

José Banús, born in Masó (Taragona) in 1906, left school at 14 to join his father in the construction business. After moving to Madrid, they established a company that gained momentum with a significant project – constructing a road to Valle de los Caidos. This success propelled his career, leading to the development of several prominent housing projects in Madrid. In the late 1950s, José Banús purchased land between the Guadaliza and Verde rivers in Marbella, initially intending to raise cattle.

However, with the emergence of a new law in 1963 focusing on tourism development, he recognized a golden opportunity. By 1964, his vision to transform the land into a tourist hotspot was set in motion.

Architect Antonio Lamela was brought on board to draft the initial plans for what would become the first marina on the Costa del Sol, funded entirely with private capital. Construction commenced in 1965 and was completed by 1968. Today, Puerto Banús has evolved into one of the premier entertainment centers in the Costa del Sol, attracting approximately 5 million visitors annually. It’s also a favored haunt for international celebrities.
